Do any of you have 3D printers in your shop? And, if yes, when do you use them?

    Hi Judi,

We have a 3D printer. We use it for customers that want a unique figure in low runs. The figure we use it for the most are rockets. The high schools in our area have rocket clubs and we do awards for the competitions. We also use it for custom plaque reliefs. There is a lot that can be done with one. I have attached a few pics of somethings we have done. (The tooth was my favorite!)

    Hi Angela,

Just curious, how do you "design" the pieces? Can you scan something or do you have a program for 3D design?

    Thanks.

    Anthony

I'll know more once we really start using ours but I don't believe the guy we purchased the machine from used 3D Design software other than what came with the printer.

What and how did you get that beautiful gold finish?

Anthony - Almost all of the designs we have used come from 3 websites. Thingiverse.com, Printables.com and Cults3D.com. Those are the most user friendly sites I have found. You can modify them in your 3D software. The picture I've attached here, is 3 files. Bulldog, oval, and duck. I was able to stack and tilt them in the software to make 1 figure. (The Citadel Bulldog Club puts on a rubber duck fundraiser and wanted it to look like the dog was wearing a duck hat)

David - The finish is all about the type and color of the  filament you use and how tight you set your layers. The bright gold is a silk filament to get that shine. In a pinch, I have used a colored filament and spray painted to get the color to match the rest of the piece. (the poo picture)

I have a FlashForge Adventure 4. It is my 2nd printer. It is very user friendly and there are great videos on their website to help you learn the machine.

Angela,  Your rocket, bulldog and tooth figures look like they have a brushed metallic finish.  Is the lighting in the photos playing with my eyes or is this the result you are getting with the silk filament?

That is the finish you get from the silk filament! The finish (in my expierence) is from how tight you make the layers when printing. It will use more material but the print comes out ready to use.

    Hi Angela,

On The bulldog figure, which looks fantastic, if you don't mind, I have two questions.

How long did it take to print each one"?

What was the cost of materials used for one?

I printed 9 of them at once and it took roughly 21 hours. A 3D print calculator estimates it about $1.63 a figure.

Angela - Can you recommend good filament suppliers? The person we purchased our 3D printer from tended to purchase everything through Amazon and we'd prefer not to go that route if possible.

Thanks again. Will you be in Vegas?

Judi - I really like www.matterhackers.com for most of supplies. I will say that the best gold silk filament I have used was off of Amazon. It is what I use to get the metallic look. Amazon.com: Silk Gold PLA Filament 1.75 mm 3D Printing Filament 1KG 2.2LBS Spool 3D Printer Material Shine Silky Shiny Metallic PLA Metal CC3D Silk PLA Gold Filament : Industrial & Scientific

I am going to Vegas. I hope to see you there.

We have a 3D printer that we got from PDS Equipment during the pandemic. We used it to create the headpiece for face shields in collaboration with a project led by NC State. Since then we have used it to create jigs but at that time we had an intern on the team who was all into it. Since then we do not have anyone to run it and have not spent the time to learn it. At some point we will.
