Just checking to see what other companies think of the Better Business Bureau today.  Is it worth it to join?  Interested in what you have to say good, bad or indifferent.
    thanks,
    Tom

I was a member and am no longer a member.  Google and Facebook reviews have pretty much replaced the service that the Better Business Bureau was offering.  You might say they are the Yellow Pages of business reviewing.  They do actually manage and follow up on complaints, so I would argue that their reviews are more authentic.

There are some who have conveyed that having your URL listed with the Better Business Bureau helps with your Google ranking, in reality I never realized that benefit when I was a member.

We've been approached about membership over the years but it always rubbed me the wrong way. First, I felt it was rather expensive. And, second, I felt like I was paying them just to maintain a good rating with the BBB.

Locally, I don't hear anyone referencing BBB ratings when sharing information about businesses. It could be different in other parts of the country.

    Tom-

    I agree with David.
The BBB is not percieved the same way today as 20 years ago.
Google reviews and to some degree FB reviews are the platforms with the most credibility with consumers.
Having a backlink on the BBB site is useful for SEO. It's impossible to determine how much credibilty google gives the BBB.

I would not put my marketing dollars in BBB. I would put it in Google ads for sure--- If you are mostly local then invest deeply in Google My Business on google maps. THis is where the juice lives.

    Hi,

So, I wanted to chime in here because I have a different perspective. To be transparent, I sit on the Board of Directors for The Better Business Bureau of Northwest Florida.

Here's my opinion as a business owner.

    • Do not underestimate the power of the BBB. (Good or Bad). I attached a photo of one of our local reports. As you can see there are over 52K inquiries a month in our small market. My shop gets dozens of inquiries per month.
    • Besides my award shop, I own a large digital marketing agency. I can directly prove an authority boost for SEO from the link you get from BBB.org (accredited businesses get multiple backlinks, especially our business: Plaques, trophies, corporate awards, promotional products, engraving, etc.)
    • A study done by Digital Marketer shows an average increase in conversions of 14% if you have the BBB logo on your website. It's considered a "Trust" badge.

Based off these reasons I would recommend accreditation.  CAVEAT: Some markets are insanely expensive. If I was going to put a "not worth it" price on it, I would not buy it if it's over xxx a year. Most markets should be way under that.

Things you should know about the BBB.

    • No, you can't buy a good rating. Like Google, the ratings are based off a complex algorithm of 16 different factors (reviews are NOT one of the factors). Everyone has a rating, even if you are not accredited. (I would look up your business listing and make sure everything is correct. If not, you can get a hold of your local BBB and update it, even if you are not accredited.)
    • The BBB is actually pretty strict on who gets accreditation. There are eight BBB Standards for Trust that BBB expects its accredited businesses to adhere to: build trust: maintain a positive track record in the marketplace, advertise honestly, tell the truth, be transparent, honor promises, be responsive (address marketplace disputes), safeguard privacy (protect consumer data) and embody integrity.
    • We have several revocations of accreditation every month for businesses being shady, several, we get the FTC involved.
    • Complaints and reviews on BBB.org are two very different things.
    • The BBB has been around for 110 years. They have a new Council that is getting very aggressive on becoming the best source for legitimate reviews. All reviews are validated and checked by the local BBB staff. I think you'll see a big push in the coming year.

    Eddie-

I am glad you prefaced your response that you are on the board of directors for BBB.
My take is that there are much better ways to spend limited marketing dollars.
For me the BBB would not be in my top 100 to marketing inititaves. Google ads-- specifically Google My Business (Maps) get will get more eyeballs than BBB.

That's helpful and timely Eddie. I actually have a call in to my BBB because as I look at budget for next year, the $500 I pay for being an accredited business was going to be a cut. Last year we won the small business flame award for this area. I have tried to get involved with them because I had thought that would be valuable, but as I go down the list of where I spend my volunteer time, BBB is not on the list. From what I see coming in the door, 99.99% of my traffic comes from our google reviews. So I am teetering on the fence as to whether I redirect that $500.

    Eddie:

Thanks for weighing in on this topic.  Nashville, with its $655 BBB membership rate, is rapidly encroaching your max threshold!
