Bronze Plaque Alternative / Plastic

  • 1.  Bronze Plaque Alternative / Plastic

I am looking for a vendor that can make a plastic style plaque, mimicking a bronze plaque in appearance. I remember from many years back there were vendors doing this, but currently I am not able to find any. Any leads let me know

    Thanks Brian

You might want to check with John at Claytex in Henrietta, TX., from memory, they had a material like that.

There was a material on the market but it never took off.  It was a blend of metal dust and some other material.  You could mask it, laser engrave to whatever depth you wanted, paint fill, then remove the mask.  You could do something similar with the the 1/8" thick Metalgraph plastic from Rowmark.  You could laminate an additional 1/4" of black APA Alternative plastic to the back to add the thickness you would need,  In this instance you would mask, rotary engrave your background, then paint.  You may need to experiment on a technique to get the stippled background texture you might want.  You also might want to research adhesion promoters for painting plastic.  Finally, you would need to remove the mask and reveal the brushed metal surface.

I would suggest lots of testing to get the paint fill and mask removal down pat, then go to town on the project.

    Hi Brian,

You may want to contact Claytex Trophies, 800-433-0965.

They have a product that looks like deep etched metal that you can laser and decorate yourself or they will do it for you.

It's called JS Composte Plates and it's for indoor or outdoor use.

We created the artwork for this plaque that is an exterior sublimated plaque.  It is all in the art.  Try it out.  Susan

Well done Susan.  What was your commitment in terms of durability of that plate?

We use the Duralux Exterior Textured Sublimation Aluminum from JPP.  It has a warranty for 5 years.  It is lasting a lot longer than that.  We also have made them for events when the bronze plaque won't arrive in time.  We then suggest that it becomes a keepsake for the person's home once the plaque is exchanged with an actual bronze piece.

Susan, can you explain how you created this plaque to look like an engraved bronze plaque using sublimation? I'm very impressed. This would be helpful for some of our customers who would like the look without the price tag of a bronze plaque.

Here is a link to some textured backgrounds you can acquire.  This is a good starting point.  https://www.istockphoto.com/search/more-like-this/676882440?assettype=image

Hi Wendy and group - I have a talented team here at R3.  John, our Master Engraver (25+ yrs experience) says this

Background is a bitmap image.  The "bronze" is a brushed brass bitmap I use for plaque proofs, except I bump up the red channel a little and then do an exaggerated unsharp mask on it to amplify the grain pattern.  Then I clip that bronze image into the text and perimeter frame.  Then on the inside of the frame and around the text I place subtle drop shadows so it looks like it is being lit from the upper left.  In general this means a white shadow above and to the left of the copy and a dark shadow below and to the right.  The shadows are the tricky part that takes some fiddling and fussing to get right.  I don't have a formula to get consistently good shadows.  Dunno about Illustrator but in Corel the way the shadow feathers and fades is kinda dependent on the size of the source object so the settings for "Matthew Clark" would be totally wrong for the date below so I have to do the shadows on a case-by-case basis.

We love the exterior sublimation material and is a great low cost alternative for those who have a limited budget.  Best of luck to you.  Susan
