Off color figure

  • 1.  Off color figure

    Posted 04-27-2023 16:05

I just purchased a case of figures from one of my suppliers.
The "gold" color is about a half a shade away from being silver.
They look awful on the trophy, which is comprised mostly of parts
    from a different supplier.

Had no choice, these were the only figures available, so I was lucky ( I think) to get them.

What is wrong with our industry? Way back when, almost everything from different
suppliers was very close in color. How about suppliers setting some standards so your
customers can actually not be afraid to purchase from more than one supplier?

Not very happy to sell theses trophies to my customer.

    Carol

    Hi Carol,

Yes it has been frustrating for some time now (years and years). I hate to say it is only going to get worse. We have vendors that have catalogs with a thousand pages and trophy items are buried in the back, which has been the writing on the wall for some time. I think the suppliers consider traditional trophies a necessary evil. For me, it has become the same, the cost, quality, and unwillingness of basic labor, the frustration with quality on trophy components, the inventory, the space needed for the production. If it wasn't in the name of business, I think I would not even entertain column trophies. (Might be time for me to rebrand). lol

Sad.....Like you said. Small part of the catalogs is actually trophy components. Unfortunately for me, my customers still buy lots of them and I enjoy making them!

Unfortunately, it is the nature of the beast, they will all fade after time. Looks like these were in the sunlight or bright lighting at one time. When we first started out, we bought out a competitor and kept our inventory in plastic totes on shelves in our garage. Just the light from the main garage door being open faded figures. Sometimes, only the half that was exposed to the light faded.

    Greg,

They come in from vendors like that now - brand new. No quality control. It costs big bucks to have to pay for legit QC in China. Unfortunately for us, our customers this is the status quo.

This was a full case in a cardboard box. Looks like a box from the 90's, but a box!

I have often wondered just what that "gold" color really is? My trophy business has really grown the last couple of years with a local go kart track and a dirt track nearby.
I have noticed the quality of trophy components has dropped considerably. Both in the imported parts and the US produced components (i.e. particle board bases, etc.).
Certainly adds another step in the labor department to clean up what the factories have missed. (If they even look at all.)

The gold is actually a dye. We have a local race track that wanted silver trim, figures etc. and we would take acetone and strip the gold off them. It was a tricky process because if you left the pieces in the acetone too long, it would start to eat the actuallly finish off from the plastic.

It is a dye. We use to have a gallon of it that you could dip your silver
figures into to make them gold.

    Carol,
Would be interested in what the dye was if you recall. Have had the same issue.
    Thanks

I don't remember what the dye was. I think it came from PDU.
It did not work very good on gold figures.
It was to dye the silver ones gold, but if faded it would probably be ok.

When PDU manufactured their figures in the US, they all started as silver. The original idea was to sell silver figures and then they offered gallons of "Gold Dye" in case you needed gold figures, you could dye what you needed. It was a messy process. Someone figured that you could take a gold figure, stick in in acetone (and then in a bucket of water to stop the process) to strip the figure back to silver. A much cleaner process. When PDU moved all their manufacturing to China, that didn't work anymore, and a cry went throughout the land. Then UPS labeled the Gold Dye as a hazardous material and PDU as well as the distributors couldn't ship without training and labeling the product as hazardous, so everyone stopped selling the dye. Might be wrong here but I think the part number was 1106.

I remember this topic coming up on the old forum.  I may have been the one inquiring about it, but hence have escaped the component trophy market.  I remember we got a response or two from suppliers.  They were sympathetic to our pain but were in a position where they really were at the mercy of the manufacturers as to the and result of the gold tones.  Feel free to correct mt if my memory is wrong on that, but they are as frustrated as we are.
