  • 1.  Sheet Metal Storage

    Hi all,

I got a lot out of the pictures that people sent for name badge displays and was wondering if anyone wanted to share pictures of how you are displaying sheet metal.  It seems that our storage bins is leaning a bit too much and should either be shored up or replaced.  Any suggestions on if it is better to store on its side or flat?  I am attaching a picture of what we have now which is what we may try to remake.

Our storage is broken into aluminum on the top and brass/steel on the bottom. The storage is under a worktable that we have attached a metal sheer to one side and a plastic cutter to the other side, where we mirrored the storage for plastic sheets. The sliding areas fit a quarter sheet perfectly and anything we cut smaller goes into corresponding bins to the right to be used for smaller projects. We've had these for over 30 years and they have worked like a charm!!! We do find that teaching employees to slide the metal back in with your shoe is good practice, so as not to slice your hand open. Hope this give you something to work with.

I also looked for a better way and had these made out of melamine boards.  They hold a lot of material and weight. I may have a pdf drawing should you want it.

Attached is what we built years ago to hold sheet stock. Each  section has a 1/4" hardboard insert that holds the 12x24" sheet. The hardboard can be removed if needed. Each section has an engraved label next to it with the needed info. On top of the sheet stock is a small box that holds the cut-off pieces.

My husband works in the publishing industry and scored this beauty from a business that closed shop a few years ago. They used it to store newspaper.
We store all rotary aluminum and brass there. On top is laser metal. That storage system is from the 80's, but we outgrew it many years ago.
The drawer cabinets are from Ikea (Alex) and used for scraps, we have several. Laser plastic is stored in a similar fashion as alum/brass.
