  • 1.  Stamps for Wax Seals

    Posted 03-08-2024 08:56

My son's fiance is looking to stamp wedding invitations with a wax seal.

I made a sample on the laser with Delrin, but the wax is sticking.

Any ideas on materials or techniques?

May be as simple as setting it on a cold surface between stampings. Just use a piece of steel and place it in the freezer. Should make the wax harden faster and prevent sticking.

.....and her dad Tom is not so bad either - But don't tell him I gave him that much praise!!!   :-)

Below is response I received from an AI search

Methods to Prevent Wax from Sticking to Stamp:

    1. Preparation:

    • Ensure the stamp is clean and free of any oils or residue.
    • Lightly dust the stamp with cornstarch or talcum powder. This creates a barrier between the wax and the metal surface.

    2. Wax Selection:

    • Use a high-quality sealing wax specifically designed for use with stamps. Lower-quality waxes may adhere more readily to the stamp.
    • Choose a wax with a lower melting point to make it easier to remove.

    3. Sealing Technique:

    • Heat the wax evenly to the correct temperature. Overheating can make the wax sticky.
    • Drip the molten wax onto the document first, allowing it to spread slightly.
    • Carefully press the stamp onto the wax and apply even pressure.
    • Hold the stamp steady for a few seconds to allow the wax to set.

    4. Removal:

    • Once the wax has cooled, gently lift the stamp straight up.

    • If any wax remains on the stamp, it can be removed with the following methods:

      • Cold water: Dip the stamp in cold water to solidify the wax. Then, break off the wax.
      • Ice: Place the stamp on ice to harden the wax. Once frozen, the wax will pop off easily.
      • WD-40: Apply a small amount of WD-40 to a cotton ball and gently rub it on the stamp. The WD-40 will dissolve the wax residue.
      • Stamp Cleaner: Use a commercial stamp cleaner specifically designed to remove wax from stamps.

    Additional Tips:

    • Practice on a test sheet before using the actual document.
    • Use a stamp with fine details to create a more intricate seal.
    • Let the wax cool completely before handling the document to prevent smudging.
