There was a material on the market but it never took off. It was a blend of metal dust and some other material. You could mask it, laser engrave to whatever depth you wanted, paint fill, then remove the mask. You could do something similar with the the 1/8" thick Metalgraph plastic from Rowmark. You ...

There are other masks that are made specifically for this that may be more cost effective, such as the GLM06 from JDS. Surfaces with a compound curve may require Blazer Orange, but that's a product made more specifically for sandcarving following laser engraving. I won't discount that it's an awesome ...
